Hipcamp can support you in collecting the appropriate occupancy taxes or goods and services tax (GST) from your bookings. While taxes can be complicated, our tools can help to make this a smoother process!
How to get started with automated tax collection:
Please note that in some states and counties, Hipcamp is required to collect and remit taxes on your behalf. View this FAQ for more details to see if your state or county is already enrolled in automatic tax collection and remittance.
- Visit the payouts and taxes tab that is located in your Property settings or under your Payout tab.
- Select 'Yes' to see more options under "Do you want Hipcamp to collect occupancy taxes for you?"
- In this view, you can enter the correct occupancy tax percentage for your state or county and add a name for it. Don’t know what your local tax rate is? Fear not! We can help you look it up.
- If you have more than one camp, you can choose which ones will have the tax rate applied to them.
- Once you have opted in, taxes will be collected for all future bookings for that camp.
- You can always return to the payouts and taxes tab in your Property settings or payout tab to make updates to your tax rate if necessary.
How to view taxes collected on your bookings:
- You can view the taxes that have been collected on each individual booking from your Calendar.
- The taxes collected will be clearly displayed on each payout in the payout history tab and in your payout summary email.
- The total tax amount will be paid out to you from Hipcamp in addition to your earnings, and it is your responsibility to file a tax return to pay this tax to your state or county.
- Don’t know how to file the tax returns? Don’t worry! We can help you.
How do I find the appropriate tax rate for my county?
Hipcamp has partnered with occupancy tax experts Avalara who will allow you to look up this information and ensure you are using the correct tax rate for your state or county.
In some counties, lodging is subject to taxes, but other forms of camping are not. If you’re providing tent camping, you may not need to collect taxes from Hipcampers.
If you’re providing lodgings such as a cabin, yurt, or other structure, you can use this tool to figure out what your appropriate transient and occupancy tax rate should be.
Do I need to pay taxes or file a tax return?
The applicability of lodging or occupancy taxes to camping varies by jurisdiction. We ask that you perform your own diligence to determine whether these taxes apply to your camp.
We at Hipcamp cannot offer you legal or accounting advice, and we recommend that you check with your state or county to learn more about the specific requirements for tax returns in your area.
Some counties expect you to file quarterly, while others may be on an annual schedule. Searching online for your state or county's occupancy tax information can likely help you find useful information.
Will I get any U.S tax forms from Hipcamp?
Will I receive a 1099-K?
You will receive a 1099-K form only if you meet the following thresholds:
- payouts have totaled more than $20,000 in a calendar year
- 200 or more transactions (bookings)
If you meet those thresholds, you need to provide some information through Stripe - your legal name, tax ID, and valid address.
You can follow the steps below to review, update, or add your information:
- Head to the Payouts section of your Host dashboard.
- Click Manage payout and taxes
- If you have direct deposits enabled through Stripe, click the Review button to enter your information or ensure the information you provided is correct
- Add or edit your business information, if needed
See more information about 1099-K forms on the IRS website.
Will I receive a 1099-MISC?
Hipcamp processes payments on your behalf and you as a Host are not a contractor, so we do not issue 1099-MISC forms for hosting on our platform. Because we know it would be a helpful resource, we may begin providing summary documents by default in the future although this is not required.
In the meantime, you’re able to view and download a complete list of your bookings and earnings from the Bookings page within your account. Follow our step by step instructions: How do I download all of my bookings and earnings for tax season? Of course, contact Hipcamp Support if you have any questions!
IRS regulations require that we collect a valid W-9 in a timely manner for reporting incomes. If you fail to provide the requested information in a timely manner, Hipcamp reserves the right to temporarily deactivate your property.
