Does Hipcamp collect and remit taxes in Canada?
Based on federal, provincial, and local laws, where Hipcamp has determined it has a collection obligation we will charge, collect, and remit those taxes to the appropriate governing agency; additional details below. Hosts cannot opt out as Hipcamp’s responsibility to collect is mandated by the federal or local government. This applies to all Hipcamp Hosts including Hosts using their own reservation software or integrated Property Management Systems (PMSs).
It is important to note that taxes can be administered by multiple jurisdictions; including provincial, county, city, and other local jurisdictions. Hipcamp may collect some but not all of these. As such, it is possible for a Host to have an obligation to collect in addition to what Hipcamp collects on their behalf.
For example: A city within a province may have an additional tax in addition to the Goods and Services Tax (GST/HST). Hipcamp may collect the GST/HST but not that specific city tax. In this instance, the Host may be required to collect the additional city tax.
Information on taxes Hipcamp automatically collects: GST and HST
As of February 24, 2025, Hipcamp has been collecting and remitting Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on behalf of Hosts. Hosts cannot opt out, as Hipcamp’s responsibility to collect is mandated by the federal government. This applies to all Hipcamp Hosts, including Hosts using their own reservations software or integrated Property Management Systems (PMSs).
The current GST and HST rates can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency website.
As a Host do I have an obligation to collect occupancy taxes?
We at Hipcamp cannot offer you legal or accounting advice, and we recommend that you check with your accountant or taxation specialist to help determine when you do have a collection obligation.
Alternatively, you can seek further information or advice from the CRA or provincial government to learn more about the specific requirements for tax returns in your area.
If a Host determines they have a collection obligation, they can enable taxes in their Host Dashboard. (See instructions here).
What do I need to do as a Host?
If You Are Registered for GST/HST
If you are registered for GST/HST with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA):
- You must update your Hipcamp Payouts & Taxes settings (see below) to include your GST/HST registration number.
- Hipcamp is required to pass GST/HST collected from bookings on your property through to you for remittance to the CRA. The amount of GST/HST transferred to you will be clearly indicated to you on your Host payout. You must report and remit that GST/HST to the CRA.
- We will also withhold GST/HST collected on our Host Fee and we must report and remit that amount to the CRA.
The taxes passed through to you will be listed on your Host payout statement.
If You Are Not Registered for GST/HST
If you are not registered:
- Hipcamp will collect and remit GST/HST.
- However, if your revenue exceeds the CRA's small supplier threshold, you may be required to register for GST/HST.
- Consider consulting a tax professional to determine whether registering is appropriate for you.

How do I report and remit GST/HST?
If you are registered for GST/HST, you are responsible for reporting and remitting your portion of these taxes to the CRA. There are two places you can view the taxes you have collected:
- On individual bookings: Navigate to an individual booking in your calendar. You can see a breakdown of the payment the Hipcamper has made, including taxes, in the booking details.
- At each payout: Taxes collected will be clearly displayed on each payout in the payout history tab and in your payout summary email.
Provincial and other taxes
In addition to GST/HST, Hipcamp also collects additional taxes in the following provinces:
Alberta
The province of Alberta collects a Tourism Levy. Hipcamp administers this levy for all bookings of physical structures. Hipcamp collected taxes will be charged to newly made reservations as of February 11, 2025. Hosts do not need to take any action to ensure these taxes are paid.
