How Hipcampers Purchase Extras
When making a booking, Hipcampers will have the option to purchase available Extras during the checkout process. Additionally, Hipcampers can return to an existing booking and request additional Extras anytime prior to their stay. Hosts will receive requests via email and push notification (so make sure you have notifications enabled) and have 24 hours to approve or decline. You can respond via your email or push notification by hitting "Accept Extras" or "Decline Extras."
Does Hipcamp Charge Commission on Extras?
Hipcamp processes Extras in the same way as the rest of a booking. Hosts keep 90% of earnings from Extras, while 10% is used to cover Hipcamp support, insurance, marketing, and transaction fees.
Creating and Editing Extras
To add, edit, or remove Extras:
- Go to your Host Dashboard
- Scroll to the Extras section and click Manage Extras
You can also jump straight there by going to the Host Dashboard menu and clicking Extras.
- Click Edit next to an existing Extra or Create a new Extra
- Set a name, description, price, and maximum quantity available per booking
- Choose whether the Extra is charged per item, per night, or per person
- Toggle Extras on or off at both the Property and Site level
- Click Save
Pricing for Extras
Extras can be priced in three ways:
- Per item: Cost = Price x Number of units selected by the Hipcamper
- Per night: Cost = Price x Number of nights booked x Number of units selected
- Per person: Cost = Price x Number of people in the booking x Number of units selected
Example Calculations:
- A camping chair rental set at $10 per item for a 4-night stay with 2 chairs rented:
$10 x 2 units = $20 - A camping chair rental set at $10 per night for a 4-night stay with 2 chairs rented:
$10 x 4 nights x 2 units = $80 - A Yoga Class Extra priced at $10 per person for a booking of 2 people purchasing 2 classes:
$10 x 2 people x 2 units = $40
Types of Extra You Can Offer
1) Experiences
Experiences let you sell events and activities on your land. Popular examples include: Farm tours, nature walks, yoga classes, horseback riding, wine tasting and foraging experiences.
Each Hipcamper with a booking can purchase up to the set maximum allowed number of guests.
Review our guidelines on experiences here.
2) Rentals
Provide rental items for convenience, such as: Tents or camping gear, bikes, kayaks, or cooking equipment.
Each Hipcamper with a booking will be able to purchase up to your set maximum quantity.
Hosts are responsible for coordinating rental logistics and Hipcamp does not support waivers or the collection of guest signatures. Review the Hipcamp insurance policy here to check which rentals are covered.
3) Goods
Sell your own produce or local wares for additional income. Popular goods include: Farm-fresh produce, handmade crafts, camping essentials (e.g. bug spray, fire starters).
Each Hipcamper with a booking will be able to purchase up to your set maximum quantity. Hosts are responsible for coordinating goods details and logistics with guests.
4) Firewood bundles
Firewood is the most popular Extra amongst hosts that allow campfires and selling your own locally sourced firewood helps prevent the spread of disease and invasive species. Hosts are responsible for maintaining their firewood inventory.
Each Hipcamper with a booking will be able to purchase up to your set maximum quantity.
Managing Extras on Upcoming Bookings
If a Hipcamper purchases an Extra, it will appear in:
- Your booking confirmation email
- The "Bookings at a glance" section of your Dashboard
- The "Booking details" panel on your Calendar
Extras can be managed in your Calendar by selecting a booking and adjusting the Extra quantities.
Note: You can only modify the quantity or add Extras to a booking if the Extra was available to the Hipcamper at the time the booking was placed. Brand new Extras you've created cannot be added to existing bookings.
