When setting up your listing on Hipcamp, you’ll come across two important concepts: Property and Unit. Understanding the difference between them is key to setting up your listing information correctly and maximising your bookings.
What is a Property?
A Property on Hipcamp refers to the entire piece of land where you host campers. This could be a farm, vineyard, a caravan park, or any other type of land that you’re opening up for outdoor stays.
Think of it as the umbrella under which all your glamping structures or camping pitches exist. Your Property listing is where you provide general information about your land, such as the name of your property, a description of its features, and photos of the overall space.
Example: If you own a 100-acre farm and decide to welcome campers, your farm would be the Property on Hipcamp.
What is a Unit?
A Unit is a specific area within your Property where campers will stay. You can have multiple Units within a single Property. Each Unit represents an individual booking option and may have different pricing, accommodation types, and amenities.
Units can be:
- Tent camping pitches (e.g. a meadow clearing or a designated field)
- Glamping setups (e.g. bell tents, yurts, A-frame cabins)
- Motorhome pitches (e.g. gravel pads with hookups or firm grassy spaces)
Each Unit has its own details, including:
- A unique name and description
- Specific pricing
- Capacity (how many people can stay at once)
- Rules
- Availability and booking settings
Example: If your 100-acre farm has three different camping spots—a tent site near the river, a campervan pitch with electric hookups, and a luxury yurt—you would create three Units within your Property.
What If I Only Have One Unit?
If you only have one Unit on your Property, that’s completely fine! You will still need to create a Property first and complete the Property details. Then set up your single Unit within that Property. Even if you have just one Unit, setting it up correctly ensures that campers can find and book your offering with all the necessary details.
For example, if you have a single glamping cabin on a small piece of land, you would create:
- A Property listing that describes the overall setting (e.g. woodland retreat, epic views, 10 minute's from the nearest footpath etc.).
- A Unit listing that details the accommodation itself (e.g. "The Cozy Woodland Cabin", sleeps 4 people, double bed, en-suite toilet, etc).
Why Does This Matter?
When setting up your listing, think of your Property as your land’s homepage and each Unit as an individual accommodation option they can book. Setting up your listing with the correct Property and Unit structure helps:
- Improve search visibility: Campers can filter by Unit types and amenities to find what suits them best.
- Simplify bookings: Each Unit has its own calendar, so you can manage availability more easily.
- Enhance guest experience: Providing detailed Unit descriptions, including specific amenities and layout details, helps campers know exactly what to expect.
