To ensure our Hipcampers have the nature-filled experience we are promising them, we have a few guidelines for listing on Hipcamp. We ask that Hipcamp Hosts review and comply with these guidelines before starting a listing.
🏡 Backyards and driveways in residential areas
Small backyards (under 2 acres) and driveways in residential areas typically aren’t a fit for Hipcamp, because Hipcampers are unlikely to have the space and privacy they need, especially if neighbors can see their unit. Generally, they fail to connect the Hipcamper with nature. Further, toilets can be an issue for units like this, as there isn’t usually enough privacy to go outside while using your personal toilet could feel intrusive.
🏘 Room, converted garage, or home rentals
We love that you want to share your home with Hipcampers, but we've found that certain homes aren't typically what Hipcampers are searching for on our platform. This includes long term vacation rentals, rooms, condos, apartments, and converted garages. Our whole platform is built on our mission to get more people outside, which means your listing should intend on connecting Hipcampers with nature above all.
🚽 Toilet must be provided by Host or Hipcamper
All campsites listed on Hipcamp must have access to a toilet, whether provided by the Host or the Hipcamper. If you’re able to provide a toilet, it must be onsite with unrestricted access to Hipcampers. If you're not able to provide a toilet onsite, Hipcampers must bring their own camp toilet. You can read our Toilet Policy page for more information.
🏟 One-time hosting events
As cool as your festival or one-time hosting event is, our platform is not built to support these and so we cannot allow you to list them at this time. If your land is always bookable by Hipcampers and you’re simply sharing a special event on your land through a new listing, that’s okay.
Frequently asked questions
🚗 What if I am in a remote location with rough roads?
Remote Hipcamps can be some of the most beautiful and private experiences that help people get outside. That said, we require a few things to ensure Hipcampers have the safe and comfortable experience in nature that we are promising them.
- Clearly communicate road conditions and vehicle requirements to safely access your land
- Specify how campers should communicate with you the day they are visiting your land
- If there isn't service on and en route to your land, ensure campers are aware of emergency procedures
- Provide at least one sign to indicate campers have arrived at the right place
🦌 What if there is a lot of wildlife near my Property?
If your Property has a lot of wildlife activity, you can still sign up to Host through Hipcamp. With that in mind, setting expectations in your Property description is key. When setting up or editing your Property, we recommend that you be very clear about the possibility of encountering wildlife in your area.
Here are some helpful tips that you could include in your description and rules:
- Require that campers keep all food stored away in a bear box or a vehicle while not in use.
- If you allow pets to accompany campers, consider adding a rule that pets be kept on a leash while on the Property to prevent them from chasing or encountering wildlife.
- Provide examples of the types of wildlife in your area. If there are bears, coyotes, wildcats, or any other potentially dangerous critters, be sure to make that very clear in your description.
